Dr Willy laid to rest with state honour

Firing 21 gun shots and guard of honour, with state honour, former chief minister Dr Wilfred de Souza was laid to rest today at Saligao today morning.
The 88-year old firebrand politician of Goa, who ruled Goa’s political scenario for 40 long years in different positions, had breathed his last on 4 September after brief illness.
Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar and deputy chief minister Francisco D’Souza were personally present at Saligao church for the mass.
Margaret Alva, former governor and union minister, flew down specially to attend Dr Willy’s funeral.
Leaders and people from across all the political parties and different fields attended the funeral in a large number.
The corpse of Dr Willy, wrapped in the tricolour flag, was brought to Saligao church and was then buried at the cemetery after the mass, after paying guard of honour and 21 gun shots, with a police band.
The mass was delivered by Fr Romaldo de Souza, Dr Willy’s elder brother.
Sindhudurg Bishop Allwyn Barreto and local priest Jose Costa were also present.
Prominent politicians like environment minister Alina Saldanha, fisheries minister Avertano Furtado, former chief minister Ravi Naik, MLAs Babu Kavalekar, Glenn Ticlo, Goa Pradesh Congress president Luizinho Faleiro, BJP vice president and NRI Commissioner Dr Wilfred Mesquita, NCP Goa president Jose Philip D’Souza, former MLAs Jitendra Deshprabhu, Shambhu Bhau Bandekar attended the funeral.
Goa’s leading businessmen like Anil Counto, Victor Albuquerque as well as personalities from different walks of life were also present, besides the villagers and Dr Willy’s followers from all over Goa.
