Will it be cabinet reshuffle or mere induction after Chovoth?

GOANEWS DESK, PANAJI | 05 September 2015 21:44 IST

Chief minister Laxmikant Parsekar has made it amply clear that he would touch his cabinet only after Chovoth, but still not clear whether it would be mere induction or reshuffle.

Parsekar had earlier announced that the induction to fill vacancy of Nuvem MLA Mickky Pacheco, presently jailed, would be done before Chovoth.

Came on the heels the news that one of the Dhawalikar brothers, probably Dipak, would be dropped from the cabinet and two Bharatiya Janata Party legislators would be inducted in the cabinet.

News also started making rounds that Parsekar may also go for portfolio reshuffle with Sudin Dhawalikar losing at least one important portfolio – PWD or transport.

Anticipatory bail arrested BJP prospects

The development took place on the day much-awaited arrest in the BJP camp, of former chief minister Digambar Kamat, flopped with the CBI court granting him anticipatory bail.

People in general and BJP sympathisers started reacting on social media that Kamat has been spared with a secret pact between Defence minister Manohar Parrikar and Kamat – both belonging to same community.

An urgent meeting of all the BJP ministers, MLAs, party office bearers and even union ministers and MP was summoned the same day to discuss the damage control, arisen due to the anticipatory bail.

Fillers were sent even in the media circles that speaker Rajendra Arlekar and deputy speaker Anant Shet would be inducted in the cabinet by dropping Dipak Dhawalikar.

‘Experienced’ or first-time?

However, another view reportedly emerged within the saffron camp that Arlekar’s induction would mean lowering his position from a VVIP to a VIP, that too at a much junior level.

But Parsekar is in a soup, if not Arlekar, since the list of ‘experienced MLAs’ is complete after the duo is inducted.

The rest of the BJP legislators are all first-time MLAs, which makes it difficult to choose.

Probably this situation has compelled to postpone the decision after Chovoth, which means definitely not before October.

The saffron party is in a hurry since next Assembly election, slated in 2017, is hardly one and a half year away.

Lion-Lotus parting away

Probably as a part of this bigger strategy, a campaign within the BJP against Dhawalikar brothers has gained momentum with Taleigao BJP coming out openly to expose them.

The BJP’s Taleigao unit the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party leader and their senior alliance partner – PWD minister Sudin Dhawalikar – the most corrupt minister.

They also did a stunt of sending over 1000 SMSs to BJP’s local president Vinay Tendulkar to sack Sudin Dhawalikar, knowing very well that it is the CM’s prerogative and not of the party president.

Eyebrows were also raised when the Anti-Corruption Branch of Goa police suddenly caught a peon in transport director’s office red handed while accepting a bribe of Rs one lakh.

Sources in the BJP allege that the peon is a strong MGP cadre and close to Dhawalikar, who is also the transport minister.

The BJP cadres are furious over Dhawalikar’s strategy of not providing enough water supply and roads in their strongholds while utilising the departmental machinery in the constituencies they are concentrating upon.

The MGP presently represents only three constituencies - Marcaim, Ponda and Priol, but is planning to contest 25 seats independently in 2017 poll.

The new focus areas include Shiroda of industries minister Mahadev Naik, Canacona of sports minister Ramesh Tawadkar, Sanguem of Subhash Phaldesai as well as Valpoi.

It is thus becoming amply clear that the partnership would not continue in the next Assembly election.

But when to bell the cat is still a question for CM Parsekar since it opens up another Pandora’s Box – who is the new MLA to be inducted in the cabinet, if not Arlekar.

The ambitious first-time BJP legislators are lobbying for it, making it more tedious for Parsekar than running the cash-starved government.

He may thus simply fill Mickky’s vacancy by inducting Shet and that’s all.

The ‘vighna’ has thus been postponed till the ‘Vighnaharta’ is immersed.
