My arrest is 'lucrative police corruption': Digambar
GOANEWS DESK, PANAJI | 12 August 2015 22:59 IST

Former chief minister Digambar Kamat has told the court that his arrest would cause immense damage to his political career, while alleging that his arrest was a ‘lucrative source of police corruption.’
Kamat is facing a corruption charge, for which the crime branch of Goa police want to arrest him.
Kamat has sought anticipatory bail in the Louis Berger bribery case, hearing on which started today.
In his defence, Kamat has also accused Goa police as “servants of the state home department,” which means that his implication is politically motivated by the ruling BJP government.
BJP chief minister Laxmikant Parsekar is the home minister of Goa state.
The hearing of his anticipatory bail application would continue tomorrow morning in the special court in Panaji, dealing with corruption cases.
“If I am arrested I will suffer great ignominy, humiliation and disgrace which will lead to many serious consequences not only for me but my entire family and also for the entire community more particularly because most people do not make any distinction between arrest at a pre-conviction stage or a post-conviction stage,” Kamat said in his application of anticipatory bail filed before the court.
Kamat, along with his former cabinet colleague and then PWD minister Churchill Alemao, is charged of accepting huge amount of bribes from Louis Berger International Inc., the US-based consultancy firm.
The firm was granted a contract of executing a project of augmentation of water supply and sewerage, funded by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
While claiming to be innocent, Kamat has accused Goa police of beieng whimsical, fanciful, imaginary and self-contradictory in placing facts of investigations in the case.
He was interrogated today evening for the third time.
The former chief minister and Margao MLA has been accused of accepting a bribe of Rs 1.20 crore, in two instalments, from Louis Berger officials.
The officials have already deposed before the magistrate of having paid huge amount of bribe to Kamat and Alemao.
Meanwhile, the judicial custody of A M Wachasundar, suspended projector director of JICA-funded project, was extended by 14 more days today.
