Opp rides on 'Mahadev' to stage a walkout from Assembly

GOANEWS DESK, PANAJI | 27 July 2015 15:48 IST

Looks like Industries Minister Mahadev Naik will sail the boat of the opposition in the monsoon session of the Assembly, which began from today.

Amidst shouting slogans in the well demanding Naik’s resignation, Speaker Rajendra Arlekar got the three opposition members pushed out of the House.

The rest of the MLAs of the Congress and the independents walked out in protest.

They also met Governor Mridula Sinha later, demanding Naik’s resignation.

The only Congress ‘loyalist’, who stayed back, was Dabolim MLA Mauvin Godinho.

Babush Monseratte, the expelled former Congressman, also stayed back, but his wife Jennifer walked out.

Naik is presently facing a charge of taking low-interest loan as a legislator for his house, which he is entitled for, and using it to buy commercial shops.

The Congress and three independents – Vijay Sardesai, Rohan Khaunte and Naresh Sawal – became aggressive on the issue on the first day of the Assembly.

While the Question Hour was called out for, three independents and two Congressmen – Alex Reginald Lawrenco and Vishwajeet Rane – rushed to the well of the House.

They were holding placards, which even called Mahadev Naik “Shree 420”.

Speaker Arlekar immediately called the Marshall and ordered to push them out of the House.

In protest, opposition leader Pratapsing Rane and other Congress members walked out.

Ruling coalition member of the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party Lavoo Mamledar (Ponda) later tried to raise the issue, stating that Naik’s loan matter was a serious issue and it should be enquired into.

Speaker however interrupted, stating that this is not the time to talk about it and called for the Question Hour.

Chief minister Laxmikant Parsekar has already dismissed any inquiry into the matter since the industries minister has already paid the loan.

But the opposition is demanding his resignation alleging that he has misguided the government and bought shops for commercial purpose at low interest.

“We will continue our protest in the coming days”, Lawrenco told goanews.com.

But BJP MLAs allege that the Congress has used Mahadev Naik issue in order to run away from the special debate on Louis Berger bribery case, which was planned much earlier.
