Mickky to quit cabinet, but no arrest for two weeks

GOANEWS DESK, PANAJI | 02 April 2015 22:49 IST

Five-month old RDA minister Mickky Pacheco will resign tomorrow, though he is not expecting any arrest at least for the next two weeks.

“Mickky has already conveyed to chief minister Laxmikant Parsekar that he would step down tomorrow”, Lyndon Monteiro, general secretary of Goa Vikas Party told goanews.com tonight.

Pending review petition before the Supreme Court, Mickky has decided not to remain part of the government, which his party is supporting.

The apex court had passed a verdict on 30 March, confirming high court order to send the Nuvem MLA to jail for six months in a case of assault on electricity junior engineer nine years ago.

All his attempts from the JMFC court to the district court to high court to the Supreme Court have failed to get relief in the assault case.

He had assaulted the government officer when he was a minister in the then Congress government. Now, he is supporting the BJP-led government.

Monteiro also confirmed that the review petition is being filed and it is expected to come up for hearing next week.

Till then, the police will not move for Mickky’s arrest as the high court order had stated that he should surrender within a fortnight.

“It means he has 15 days before he surrenders”, says Monteiro.

Meantime, Mickky is trying hard to get a stay, pending hearing on the petition, so that he could avoid the jail term.

Mickky in the meanwhile was supposed to personally meet the CM late tonight, perhaps to discuss filling of the vacancy in the cabinet.

His two-member GVP has supported the BJP-led government right from the existing Assembly was elected in 2012.

However, the GVP got a place in the cabinet almost after three years, when former chief minister Manohar Parrikar resigned to take up a higher responsibility as the defence minister of the country.

It is to be seen now who fills the vacant post – GVP’s another MLA of Benaulim Caitu Silva or another MLA from the BJP.
