GOANEWS DESK, PANAJI | 28 March 2014 20:46 IST

The Special Investigation Team of the Goa police crime branch today arrested former mining director Arvind Lolayekar in a mining scam.
Lolayekar is retired but facing charges in a mining scam the SIT has been probing.
Along with other officials including another former mines director and even former chief minister (and mines minister) Digambar Kamat had faced interrogation by the SIT earlier.
It had followed few arrests, around four, by the SIT, but mainly junior officers in the mines department and mining companies.
Lolayekar however is the first major arrest at the level of director.
The SIT has been probing at least 10 different cases of mining scam.
Lolayekar was once again summoned for questioning this morning to Crime Branch's Dona Paula office near Panaji and was later placed under arrest.
The SIT had earlier arrested Subroto Barik of Frost International Pvt Limited from Gujarat, Prashant Sahoo and Ravindra Prakash of Magnum Minerals and Robert Gonsalves, a draftsman in the mines department.
