GOANEWS DESK, PANAJI | 07 March 2014 22:59 IST

The Lok Sabha election for Goa state has been finally rescheduled for 12 April.
It was earlier scheduled for 17 April, in the fifth phase.
Demand for reschedule was however made by all, including the Goa government as well as Goa Church and even Goa Human Rights Commission, since 17 April is a Maundy Thursday, a religious day for the Christian community.
Accordingly, the Election Commission of India today announced the rescheduling.
“The Commission received representations from various quarters requesting for change of Date of Poll in the State of Goa from 17.04.2014., in view of Maundy Thursday which is a Restricted Holiday, having local importance”, stated the ECI notification.
There is however no change in issue of notification, on 19 March, since when the process of filing nominations would begin.
Both the Lok Sabha constituencies would now also get only 24 days for an official campaign.
Only three states – Assam, Sikkim and Manipur – were going for a poll in five constituencies on 12 April. Two more constituencies of Goa would be now added to it.
Comparatively, 13 states with 122 constituencies were going for a poll on 17 April while 12 states with 117 constituencies were going for poll on 24 April.
In addition, the ECI has also rescheduled poll in Hazaribagh constituency for 10 April, due to Ram Navami.
