Objection raised over LS poll on Maundy Thu in Goa
GOANEWS DESK, PANAJI | 05 March 2014 13:04 IST

The Lok Sabha election date for Goa – 17 April – has run into rough weather as it is Maundy Thursday for the Christian community of Goa.
While few political parties and social activists have demanded change in the election date, the local election office has already conveyed the feelings to the Election Commission of India.
Goa Vikas Party president Mickky Pacheco as well as social activist Aires Rodrigues have already sent sms to the local election office, objecting to the date of election.
They also plan to make a formal petition in this regard to the ECI.
“We have already taken up the issue with the higher authorities”, joint electoral officer Narayan Navati told goanews.com.
Maundy Thursday is a religious day, a day before Good Friday, observed with religious rituals during the holy week, before Easter.
It is possible that the ECI planned one-phase Goa election on 17 April, along with neighbouring states of Karnataka and Maharashtra.
There are elections scheduled in many states on 17 and 24 April, but poll only in three north-eastern states on 12 April – Assam, Sikkim and Tripura.
