Cross sections condemn attack on Wagh

Several political parties and organisations as well as social organisations have condemned the attack on St Andre MLA Vishnu Wagh, irrespective of his political affiliation to the ruling BJP.

Newly appointed Congress state president John Fernandes, while condemning the attack, alleged that the incident establishes a fact that even people’s representatives are not safe in the BJP regime in Goa.

Curtorim MLA and Congress spokesperson Aleixo Reginald Lourenco demanded similar action, as was initiated against Tarun Tejpal and Maharashtra minister’s son Nilesh Rane, against those who attacked Wagh.

The Nationalist Congress Party, whose state president Nilkanth Halarnkar was the organiser of the Kirtan Mahotsav attended by Wagh, alleged that it was a cold-blooded conspiracy of the BJP and its government to murder its own MLA.

Wagh has been criticising misdeeds of his own party and the government, observed Halarnkar, due to which he was attacked by the party cadres.

He also demanded immediate arrest of Tivim MLA Kiran Kandolkar, who had defeated Halarnkar in last election, as the former’s supporters had attacked Wagh.

The Aam Aadmi Party (Goa), while condemning the attack, said this intolerance exhibited by the anti-social elements goes against the very principles of democracy and right of expression.

Adv Thalman Pereira, leader of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), also demanded impartial investigation by Goa police into the case and to apprehend and charge-sheet the offenders and also to ensure that they are duly punished in accordance with law, especially since there are allegations that ruling party's supporters were behind the dastardly attack.

Goa People's Forum (GPF), led by Adv Satish Sonak, also joined the condemnation spree, while describing the attack as 'dangerous trend in introducing the ugly culture of political violence in peaceful state of Goa', to settle petty personal scores.

"Political parties are free to settle intra-party differences or policy issues internally and peacefully. However, the murderous and pre-planned mob attack on the St Andre MLA has raised very questions," Sonak stated.

The Gomantak Kshatriya Bhandari Samaj, of which Wagh is a national spokesperson, also condemned the attack and demanded stern action against those who attacked their leader.
