Goa to confiscate 4 MT illegal iron ore, costing around Rs 2500 Cr

GOANEWS DESK, PANAJI | 11 November 2013 19:43 IST

Goa government plans to confiscate almost four million tones of stacked iron ore, worth around Rs 2500 crore.

As informed by chief minister Manohar Parrikar at a press conference today, the mines department has already identified 1.22 MT of iron ore stacked at different places, which is not being shown on record by anybody.

In addition, the mines department has issued notices to several traders to prove the ownership of around 2.70 MT of iron ore being stacked.

“If they do not come forward to prove its ownership, we will confiscate it”, he said.

The illegal iron ore would thus amount to around 3.9 MT, said Parrikar, which could be valued to around Rs 2500 crore at the existing rate at dollars in the Chinese market.

The state government has today submitted a fresh affidavit to the apex court, providing details of the illegal iron ore, stacked at different places in Goa, at the jetties or the lease areas.

In addition, the Supreme Court today also allowed to e-auction 11.48 MT of iron ore and the returns of it would go to government treasury, as per the interim order passed by the Supreme Court.

A decision in regard with the ownership of these iron ore stocks would be taken only after the apex court takes a final decision.

“Even this iron ore would be confiscated by us, if nobody comes forward to prove its ownership”, said Parrikar.

The rest of the stocks of 11.48 MT of iron ore has been valued at around Rs 7500 crore.

Till then, the amount earned through the e-auction would remain in the state treasury.

Parrikar also disclosed his plan to grant fresh leases only through auction and not simply by renewing it.
