Goan artists demand 3 more Konkani films at IFFI

GOANEWS DESK, PANAJI | 24 October 2013 19:21 IST

Goa Kalakar Manch has urged Goan authorities to include three more Goan films at the International Film Festival of India this year.

‘Baga Beach’, a new feature film directed by internationally acclaimed Goan director Laxmikant Shetgaonkar, has already been selected in the Panorama section of the 44th IFFI, beginning from 20 November.

A delegation of Goan artists, headed by GKM president and actor Rajdeep Naik, called on chief minister Manohar Parrikar, also the chairman of Goa Entertainment Society, as well as Vishnu Wagh, the ESG vice chairman.

The Manch has demanded screening of three Konkani films – Mortu, Suring and Gunaji, which are ready with Censor Board certificates.

Directors of all the three films – Jitendra Shikerkar, Swapnil Shetkar and Sharmad Raitukar – were also part of the delegation.

The delegation met the ESG authorities in the background of Wagh’s announcement to have a special section of Konkani film in the IFFI every year.

He later on said that the decision cannot be implemented this year since the films have already been selected.

The special focus this year is on North Eastern films of India.

The Directorate of Film Festival has selected 216 foreign films from among 650 entries received for the 44th IFFI.

Similarly, for Indian Panorama, the juries have selected 25 feature films from 210 eligible entries.

The selected films include six Malayalam movies, five Bengali, four Hindi, three Marathi and one each in Kannada, Tamil, English/Hindi, Konkani, English/Konkani, Oriya and one movie in missing language.

The Manch however claims that IFFI would have total 300 screenings for total 150 films while 150 would be rescreened.

They have demanded to accommodate the three Konkani films in the rescreening slots, as IFFI held in Goa needs to encourage local Konkani films.

Parrikar, states the Manch press note, has assured the delegation to pursue the matter with the DFF.

In the last nine years since IFFI has come to stay in Goa permanently, the prestigious film fest of India has screened seven Goan films - six Konkani feature films and one Marathi non-feature national award winning film – Eka Sagar Kinari by Shetgaonkar.

The six Konkani films are - Alisha, Sawariya.com, Antarnad, O Maria, Paltadcho Munis and Digant.
