Iron ore export could start by Nov: CM

Goa government is preparing grounds to start iron ore exports by November while beginning mining operations by January, presuming that the Supreme Court would dispose off the case by October.

After studying the mining leases on case-t-case basis, the mines department has till now cleared around 28 mines, which could sign lease deeds to start operations.

“We have decided to lift the ban imposed by Goa government on these mines”, said chief minister Manohar Parrikar at the cabinet briefing.

However, he clarified that mining operations on these leases could resume only after the Supreme Court hears the pending case and lifts its own ban imposed in October last year.

“Even after theSupreme Court order, we would require some time to complete the formalities like environment clearance, IBM certification, water and air clearances and other things”, said Parrikar.

He expects the Supreme Court to immediately allow transportation and export of the iron ore lying in the lease areas as well as at the mining jetties, once the case is diposed off.

“Even if the Suprme Court disposes the case by October, we would require minimum 30 days to allow transportation of extracted ore”, said the chief minister.

 

According to him, though around 720 MT ore is presently lying at different places, only 10 per cent of it could be exported since the export quality has been now upgraded to 55 per cent.

Following this, Parrikar said the mines could start its actual operation only after the state government completes its formalities in 45 to 60 days.

The mines could thus start operating with actual extraction only by January, said the chief minister.

Parrikar also informed the media that the cabinet has also decided to wind up Justice Khandeparkar committee, which was supposed to probe into illegalities into mining.

“We did not feel the need of it after the Lokayukta probing into financial irregularities and the criminal angle being probed into by the Crime Branch of Goa police”, he said.
