SC may dispose Goa mining case by Oct

The long-pending case of Goa’s illegal mining may finally be disposed of by September or October by the Supreme Court with continous week-long sittings.
A final decision in this regard would be taken by Chief Justice of India Justice P Sathasivan.
As per the information reaching here, the forest bench today agreed to put up the request before the Chief Justice of India to hear the Goa mining case in one go.
The case came up for a mention today, when Goa government made a strong plea to hear the case as soon as possible and dispose it after continous hearing.
A bench comprising of Justice A K Patnaik, Justice Surinder Singh Nijjar and Justice Ranjan Gogoi heard the matter today.
Justice T S Thakur, on the bench, has been replaced by Justice Patnaik as the former had opted out from hearing the case.
The information reaching here revealed that the forest bench now sits on Mondays instead of Fridays, but only for two hours in the afternoon.
As there are almost 25 matters pending before the forest bench, a plea was made to hear Goa case continuously for four to five days and dispose it.
While agreing to the plea, the bench said a final decision in this regard need to be taken by the CJI, whom the matter would be now referred to.
The dates of hearing would be decided by the CJI and the lawyers expect it to come up either in September or October.
Based on Shah Commission report on Goa’s illegal mining, Goa Foundation had approached the apex court on 25 September last year, seeking total ban on mining activity in Goa.
Accordingly, the apex court, on 5 Ocotober last year, had suspended all the mining operations in Goa including transportation of manganese ore of all the leases, whether lying at the mine-head or stockyards.
The apex court had also directed the Central Empowered Committee to submit its report and the interim report was accordingly filed on 7 December last year.
It is learnt that Goa government has replied to the CEC report this month.
