No info to foreigners under RTI: CM

GOANEWS DESK, PANAJI | 25 June 2013 19:15 IST

Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar has issued a circular asking all Public Information Officers (PIOs) to refuse information to foreigners, under Right to Information Act.

He has also sought details about those who have sought information under Right to Information Act.

The RTI activists had protested against the chief minister seeking information about the RTI applicants, alleging his plan to harass the activists.

Parrikar however said he has sought information to find out how many foreigners have applied.

"There are at least four to five foreigners who had procured information under RTI even though the Act makes it clear that only Indians can seek information," Parrikar told reporters.

Goa government has sought details of RTI applicants after it came to the light that some foreign nationals secured information through the mechanism and have filed cases in courts of law against government.

Parrikar has also asked the PIOs to ensure that the applicant is an Indian national.

According to Parrikar, it was easy to prove nationality of the applicant.

"Even photocopy of any document proving his nationality will do," he said.
