1 km buffer zone almost finalised: CM

Buffer zone for mining is almost settled at one kilometer from the wild life sanctuary or national parks, claims chief minister Manohar Parrikar.
There are around 28 mining leases falling within one km in Goa, while six to seven of them were working mines.
After returning from the all-party delegation to the prime minister on mining, Parrikar today told the media that they did not discuss the issue of buffer zone since it is almost settled.
All have reached a consensus to have a buffer zone of only one km, subject to natural boundary, said Parrikar.
The union ministry of environment and forests had earlier proposed a buffer zone of 10 kms to prohibit mining.
Goa government had proposed buffer zone of only one km.
If the notification comes, even before the Supreme Court decides, these mines would certainly be closed for ever.
Parrikar said his demand with the PM for a financial package for mining dependent people also includes rehabilitation of the people dependent on the mines within the buffer zone.
“I need to plan some alternate like eco-tourism, for which the centre needs to give environment clearance”, he said.
The all-party delegation Parrikar led to PM included legislators belonging to the BJP, MGP, independents, Congress MP Francisco Sardinha as well as representatives of Goa Mining People’s Front.
“GVP leader Mickky Pacheco could not make it due to personal commitment while opposition leader Pratapsing Rane requested Sardinha to accompany us”, said Parrikar.
He dismissed the allegation that all the parties did not represent the delegation while stating that he was intimated by the PMO hardly 36 hours in advance about the meeting.
