GMPF urges BJP conclave to demand mining resumption
GOANEWS DESK, PANAJI | 08 June 2013 16:11 IST

Goa Mining Peoples’ Front has urged the BJP national executive committee to pass a resolution for immediate resumption of mining operations in Goa.
The GMPF delegation today met BJP national president Rajnath Singh and submitted him a memorandum, endorsed by Goa chief minister Manohar Parrikar and North BJP MP Shripad Naik.
As mining operations have stopped in Goa due to Supreme Court order, the GMPF is knocking at all the possible doors to try and get the operations resumed.
“We have urged the BJP chief for resumption of mining in a sustainable and scientific manner to protect the lives and livelihood of over four lakh people of Goa”, said Suhas Naik, the GMPF convenor.
Christopher Fonseca, another GMPF leader and trade unionist, observed that mining has remained as the single most employment – generating industry in the State.
“Mining contributed to over Rs 1480 crore per annum to the State and Rs 6665 crore per annum to the Central exchequer”, he said.
The Supreme Court hearing is expected to begin this month.
