Fonseca on fast condemning Zuari Agro

GOANEWS DESK, PANAJI | 15 May 2013 21:56 IST

Christopher Fonseca has sat on a protest hunger strike at Zuarinagar in protest of huge amount of retrenchments and harassment to the contract workers of Zuari Agro Chemicals Ltd.

He has alleged that the state government is in collusion with the ZACL management since the harassment to workers continues in spite of an agreement reached with chief minister Manohar Parrikar.

The issue started with the ZACL management terminating services of over 500 workers on the ground   that their   services are not required.

Fonseca has alleged that the management has been holding labour commissioner’s office in utter contempt by not even attending the conciliation proceedings.

The ZACL management has terminated the services without even securing government approval, which is a legal requirement.

In addition, says Fonseca, more than 20 workers have been suspended on vague and false charges.

The hunger strike is also in protest of delaying payments of salaries, making short payments and effecting huge penal deductions from salaries.

Over 600 contract workers in ZACL are thus out without salaries and without job.

People of Goa should come out and support the workers of Zuari.

Christopher Fonseca has been been fighting for justice. He is a sincere leader known for his good work in support of the suppressed workers and deserves our support in his fight for justice to the workers involved.

If Zuari has flouted the laws, action as per the law should be taken against it.
