Ruling politicians trapped by 'Only for Dabolim'

The anti-Mopa movement has suddenly gained momentum in Salcete, cornering even ‘ruling’ coalition MLAs and ministers to support the movement ‘Only for Dabolim’.
Following Fatorda MLA Vijay Sardesai’s ‘Goenkar’ opposing Mopa air port, Fr Eremito Rebello’s “Goans Only for Dabolim” is now creative much bigger wave presently in Salcete.
Tomorrow’s rally convened in Margao would thus decide what stand the Salcete-based politicians should take, including ‘independent’ minister Avertano Furtado.
Series of meetings held in the villages of Salcete taluka for over a week now has shaken up the ruling politicians, especially on the eve of forthcoming Lok Sabha election.
“Mopa is a real estate scam”, alleges Fr Rebello.
Several NGOs have gathered around him, posing it as a non-political movement.
According to Fr Rebello, Mopa air port would break the backbone of economy as it would be shifted away from the whole tourism belt.
While Mopa is in the eastern part of northernmost taluka of Goa – Pedne, most of the five star hotels of Goa are located in the coastal region of Salcete taluka in South Goa.
Rajendra Kakodkar, an activist, feels no point in building a new air port in new area when Dabolim has lots of scope to expand.
He points out that the existing Dabolim air port is located in an area of 1.60 lakh square metres while three more lakh square metres of land is more than enough to take care of entire projected future requirement of Goa’s air traffic.
“There is almost 10 lakh sq mts of land available around Dabolim and the state and union governments could easily acquire it to expand the existing Dabolim air port”, he says.
Issues of Congress and BJP politicians purchasing huge tracts of land around Mopa have also been raised, calling it a real estate scam.
