PM assures GMPF to press for daily SC hearings

GOANEWS DESK, PANAJI | 07 May 2013 18:17 IST

Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh has assured Goa Mining People’s Front to try and press for daily hearing of Goa’s mining case even during summer vacation that begins from 11 May.

The Supreme Court is expected to begin hearing the Goa mining case from tomorrow.

The apex court however would close down for summer vacation from 11 May, almost for a month.

On the eve of the seven-month-long-awaited hearing, the GMPF met the PM today evening, almost for 15 minutes.

As quoted by GMPF Convenor Adv Suhas Naik to goanews.com, Dr Singh said:

“Environmental concerns should be sincerely addressed, but all should remember that poverty is the greatest polluter.”

The PM also told the delegation that the PMO is closely working with all the concerned ministries to ensure early resumption of mining in Goa.

“We will take all the possible steps to see that Goans do not suffer any more due to mining ban”, said Adv Naik, quoting the prime minister.

As announced earlier, South Goa Congress MP Francisco Sardinha took the initiative in fixing PM’s appointment with the GMPF delegation.

The delegation later also met union mines minister Dinsha J Patel.

Memorandums were submitted to both, putting forward all their demands, including special central package for the mine-ban victims.

As told to goanews.com, the PM as well as Patel has assured them to talk to the concerned ministries in this regard.

Though the GMPF could not meet union minister for environment and forests Jayanthi Natarajan, Naik said Dr Singh has assured them to personally talk to her in this regard.

Besides Adv Naik, the delegation included Christopher Fonseca, Barge Owners Association president Atul Jadhav, officials of north and south truck owners’ associations as well as two lady sarpanch – Pramila Ghadi and Geetali Naik.
