Francisco Xavier Fernandes, the arrested suspect, confessed to the police late last night of having thrown the burning motorcycle on the railway track, to take revenge on Indian Railways.
A major tragedy was averted after midnight, at 0.30 hours of 28 April, when a driver of Ro Ro train stopped the train when he saw fire on the railway track outside Sarzora tunnel, little ahead of Madgao railway station.
The Konkan Railway police had moved into action, arresting Fernandes the next day.
Fernandes was a railway employee at Central Railways, sacked for evading his duties.
Since then, Fernandes was planning to take a revenge on Indian Railways.
Hailing from Assolna, Fernandes stole the TVS motorcycle of Walter Lobo from his dance floor at Gudi Paroda and drove it to the track at Sao Jose de Areal, to ignite and throw it on the tracks.
Fernandes was recruited in railways after his father – a ticket collector – died on duty.
He has been now remanded to three-day police custody.
Fortunately, no accident could take place as the Ro Ro driver was alert while he saw it between two passenger trains - Netravati Express and Kerala Sampark Kranti Express.
