Margao to try again door-to-door garbage collection

Margao plans to have yet another trail of door-to-door garbage collection by segregating it, this time with Madel, from 1 May.
The decision was taken at a high power sub-committee on garbage today, chaired by Margao MLA Digambar Kamat.
"This is the first time the segregated garbage will be collected from Madel in Fatorda constituency. Once e we succeed, it would be extended to one ward of Margao constituency”, he said.
Kamat however preferred not to speak about earlier experiments three years ago, during his tenure as the chief minister.
Today’s meeting was also attended by Fatorda MLA Vijay Sardesai, Margao municipal chairperson Arthur D’Silva, Chief Officer Deepali Naik and Shridhar Kamat of Fomento Green.
The Margao Municipal Corporation had taken up door-to-door collection in 2008 in then MMC chairperson Savio Coutinho’s ward, but was then discontinued as the collection labourers were not paid.
“We are still continuing with it as the residents got used to it and everybody was happy”, Savoi Coutinho told goanews.com.
The MMC had also taken up a similar drive in Amrut Nagar in 2007.
Chief officer Deepali Naik was unaware of the new decision, but assured to implement it successfully as per the sub-committee’s decision.
Margao is desperately waiting for a permanent solution on garbage collection and treatment while trial based experiments are still on.
