Goans get Rs 800 Cr from 43 countries

Emigrant Goans spread out in 43 countries get remittances of around Rs 800 crore to their motherland.

However, 80 per cent of it is spent on daily subsistence, education, medical treatment and debt-repayment.

The Goa Migration Study was conducted by Goa government, in association with the central government, in 2008.

“However, copies of the study are not readily available”, says chief minister Manohar Parrikar.

Curtorim MLA Aleixo Reginald Lourenco had asked a question in this regard in the ongoing Assembly session.

According to information supplied by Parrikar, 56 per cent of Goan emigrants are in the whole Gulf region, followed by 13 per cent in Europe, 11 per cent in South and South East Asia and 10 per cent in North America.

There are also 7 per cent Goans working on cruise liners and merchant ships.

The migration study reveals that 16 per cent households have either an emigrant or a return emigrant in the house.

As census figures show around 5.76 lakh houses in Goa, it is estimated to have Non-Resident Goans in around 92000 houses.

The study reveals that 20 per cent of these emigrants are women.

The data however has not been updated since last five years.
