Konkani भाशण & doles as MoI still haunts
GOANEWS DESK, PANAJI | 18 March 2013 20:38 IST

Perhaps for the first time since it was made the official language 25 years ago, Konkani was showered with facilities and its due recognition in today’s budget.
The major highlight of it was chief minister Manohar Parrikar reading out the first part of his budget in Konkani, perhaps for the first time in the history of Goa Assembly.
The official usage of Konkani was started with Speaker Rajendra Arlekar conducting official proceedings of the Assembly in Konkani.
As the second part of the budget dealing with taxation was too technical and was thus read out by Parrikar in English.
The chief minister also announced several initiatives in his speech to promote Konkani as the official language, almost 25 years after it was accorded the status in 1987.
Following training the top officials of the bureaucracy to understand Konkani, Parrikar said he has created two different cells for Konkani and Marathi in the Official Language department.
The cells would immediately recruit 10 translators each in both the languages, besides other posts.
Also employees in all the departments would be trained for Konkani.
The government has also decided to put up all its boards in both Konkani and Marathi within three months while making it mandatory to all the private establishments, registered under commercial tax, to have its boards in Konkani-Marathi.
Besides Rs one crore each to both Konkani and Marathi Academies, the government has also announced provision of Rs two crore for Konkani Bhavan.
“I will also try and provide necessary funds to the Konkani Bhasha Mandal”, said Parrikar.
As the issue of Medium of Instruction is still haunting the government, Parrikar once again announced that the Advisory Council under the Right to Education Act would be constituted within three to four months to find a permanent solution to the issue.
“I appeal to all those concerned about this issue to have patience and help me in resolving this issue without any confrontations”, said Parrikar.
He reiterated all the special facilities made available to the primary schools running in Konkani and Marathi, now with a provision of Rs 2.5 crore in the budget.
