UGDP condemns attack, alleges Govt collusion

GOANEWS DESK, PANAJI | 04 March 2013 19:26 IST

United Goans Democratic Party has alleged that the local Bharatiya Janata Party government is supporting the fascist elements involved in illegal mining while condemning the attack on RTI activist in Margao on Saturday.

Over 500 mining-dependent people had come in seven buses and had disrupted a closed door meeting on illegal mining in a tiny CD Blue Chip hall in Margao.

UGDP vice president Radharao Gracias, reacting to this incident, alleged that the police were clearly colluding the protestors.

He said all the right wing organisations like Nazis in Germany, fascists in Italy or Muslim fundamentalists in Islamic countries are always against human rights and oppose freedom.

"In Goa the BJP supports such elements", quipped Gracias.

He also felt that these 'elements' are unfortunately misusing the mining-dependent people for their own selfish Goans.

Instead, Gracias suggested that the mining activity be nationalised and these mining-dependent people be given contracts of extracting iron ore rather than giving it to few private persons, who then become MLAs.

"Why should we continue with the leases given by the Portuguese? Terminate these leases and let the government starts running mining business", opined Gracias.

According to him, this one decision would end Goa's economic crisis as the state would earn not less than Rs 10 to 12,000 crore as profits.

"One Sesa Goa, I am told, made a profit of Rs 4000 crore last year", he pointed out.
