GF to demand cancellation of all leases & mining nationalisation

GOANEWS DESK, PANAJI | 11 February 2013 20:31 IST

Goa Foundation would demand in the Supreme Court cancellation of all the mines operating illegally and restart mining only after nationalising mining.

Goa Foundation lawyer Prashant Bhushan has taken a position that all the mining leases are illegal and all need to be cancelled.

He feels that the Supreme Court would take at least one year to dispose of the case.

The hearing of Goa would expedite only after hearing of Karnataka illegal mining is over.

Adv Bhushan disclosed this in an exclusive interview to HCN.

Bhushan was in Goa to address a public meeting of his Aam Aadmi Party after which he spoke to HCN editor-in-chief Sandesh Prabhudesai about the mining issue.

"Even Shah Commission and the Supreme court-appointed Centrally Empowered Committee has taken a view that almost all the leases are illegal. In that case, the court has to cancel all the leases", he felt.

As the mining mafia has proved to have been dominating the whole government machinery and the political class whether in Goa, Karnataka or Odisha, Bhushan felt it would be  wise if mining sector is henceforth handled by the public sector.

"The mining mafia has depleted the environment, water sources, agriculture and even livelihood of the people in the mining belt", he pointed out.

Bhushan however refuted the charge that Goa Foundation has been delaying the hearing in the supreme court with additional complaints.

He said the supreme court is presently hearing the Karnataka illegal mining case, only after which the Goa hearing would begin shortly.

However, he said it would take at least one year for the supreme court to decide the whole matter.

He however said the groundwork to present the case before the Supreme Court is going on.

But the court has to decide several issues including illegalities committed in granting leases, in handling the iron ore, extraction, export and even recover of the money, said Bhushan.

Mr. Bushman is absolutely right in claiming that the mining be nationalized and all the leases be ceased. No more mining leases to private entrepreneurs. The mining resources are unexplored wealth of all the Goans and not few mine owners who have exploited and looted Goans for decades.

Goans, please wake up from your slumber, get out of your sheepish attitude. Let us force the Government to stop and cancel all the mining leases. It is our wealth and all the Goans must get the benefits of mining income. Let the Government start mining in public sector. We all will benefit. Not the few "Kars" of Goa.

Goa Foundation should vigorously persue this issue and take it to logical conclusion of ceasing all the mining leases to private parties.
