CEC recommends recovery of illegal mining from mine owners

The Centrally Empowered Committee has strongly recommended recovery of the amount of illegally exported iron ore from the mine owners while life-time ban on 87 mines.
The CEC filed its interim report before the Supreme Court on Friday.
The Supreme Court has told all the parties – the mine owners and transport operators, central and state government authorities as well as petitioners - to file their objections to the report.
The next hearing is scheduled on 4 January.
The CEC has strongly recommended that the state government, within three months, quantifies the illegal ore exported and recover compensation from those “involved in production, trade or export of illegal iron ore.”
The 87 mines to be banned permanently include 42 mines operating in and within one kilometer of the wild life sanctuaries. The CEC has suggested to permanently revoke their environment clearances.
Similarly, the CEC has recommended not resume operations of 45 mines, whose condonation was delayed.
The CEC has however recommended to keep in abeyance 120 mining leases, which are operating within 10 kilometers of the sanctuaries, as per the buffer zone guidelines.
Also would be kept in abeyance mining activity of the leases which are operating wholly or partly in the forests.
The court has also been recommended to constitute a high level committee under Goa chief secretary to ascertain returns filed by mine owners and place it before the court within three months.
The chief secretary has also been told to file monthly Action Taken Report about leases operating in violation of rules.
Goa government is also told to notify comprehensive rules for storage, transportation and shipment and not to permit any mining till then.
The CEC has also strongly recommended strong action against officers and other involved in condoning the delay of mining leases and not to permit to resume these mines.
