Protesting mining workers held at IFFI

Around 200 protestors demanding resumption of iron ore mining activity in Goa were arrested this morning a few metres away from the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) venue, police said.

Goa Mining People's Front (GMPF), a conglomeration of the organisations affected by mining halt, held demonstrations at Azad Maidan today, just a few metres from the IFFI venue.

GMPF is demanding resumption of the mining activity, which has been put to halt after directives from the Supreme Court.

Around 200-odd protestors had gathered at Azad Maidan and planned a 'satyagraha', led by senior labour union leader Christopher Fonseca.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Umesh Gaonkar said that section 144 of IPC has been clamped in the city due to the ongoing IFFI.

"All were placed under preventive arrest," he said, adding that protestors peacefully walked into the police vans without any resistance.

The iron ore mining industry in Goa, which is one of the biggest in the country, has come to a standstill following the SC order.

Justice M B Shah Commission in its report had alleged large scale illegalities in the iron ore exports from the state.

this govt is so shameless, this cm is whatching blue films and partying with heroins at iffi when two lakh homes have not celebrated diwali as their people are out of job due to mining ban. On top of it they are arresting poor protesters. What the people who have nothing to eat should do?

Many of these protesters are usually known to be sponsored by the Mine Owners.

This was a fact confirmed by Justice Shah while he was in Goa.

It was estimated that there were 20,000-25,000 truck owners that were affected by the Mining impasse.

However it has now been confirmed,that only 7000 have come forward to seek assistance.

So where are the remaing 13000 to 18000 Truckers hiding?.

It has also come to light that many of these truck owners were either the Police,Government Servants and Politicians.

Goan Governments & Goan Political Party`s,including the current Government , the BJP, have consistently demonstrated ineptness in prosecuting criminal activities.

They are only good in rhetorics & empty slogans.Words but no action.

Mr Parrikar has made empty promises.Lokayukta & filng FIR`s against Kamat & Rane are collecting dust at his desk.

Goans should not expect any JUSTICE to come out of the Goa Government.

However there is hope ,that the Shah Commission & The Supreme Court may deliver some respite.

Goan Politicians are only good, at breaking Coconuts at Opening ceremonies.They are unlikely to break -up corruption at any level, as they themselves are the Master perpertrators.
