Vijay for regional outfit as Cong fails as Opposition

GOANEWS DESK, PANAJI | 10 August 2012 19:55 IST

Fatorda independent MLA Vijay Sardesai has strongly advocated need of a regional party in Goa as the Congress has miserably failed to perform as a strong opposition in the state.

The issue of a regional party was heatedly debated on a TV show hosted by Prudent channel after the month-long monsoon Assembly session ended on Wednesday.

The TV show discussed experiences and opinions of three fresher MLAs, who performed the best in the House, along with senior journalist Prakash Kamat.

The other two legislators were BJP Sanguem MLA Subhash Phaldesai and Porvorim independent MLA Rohan Khaunte.

Sardesai, who has maintained equidistance from both the ruling BJP and the opposition Congress, came down heavily on the Congress for its non-performance.

“The Congress has struck a deal with the ruling BJP through floor-fixing”, he alleged.

Though his viewpoint was not fully supported by others, all the panelists were unanimous that the nine-member Congress failed to perform in the Assembly.

“The only solution is to have a strong regional party to take ahead all the issues pertaining to the interest of the state”, opined Sardesai.

While remaining non-committal on it, Phaldesai however agreed that the ruling BJP actually requires a strong opposition to keep the government on its toes.

Khaunte, who supports the ruling BJP, felt that it was too premature to talk about a regional party in next election though he fully agreed that the Congress has proved to be a non-performer.

Kamat, who opined that the freshness in this Assembly from the new faces was quite encouraging, also agreed with Sardesai.

Sardesai also raised several issues like mining, medium of instruction, casinos etc where he felt that the BJP has taken a U turn by following the Congress line.

“The Congress is creating a situation where people will have no option but to look forward towards a regional outfit as the alternative if the BJP also goes no breaking its election promises and the great hope they have created”, said Kamat.

The whole debate is available on Prudent Media channel.

We have not forgotten that Vijay left Congress because he was denied Congress ticket.

There are already too many regional outfits. There is no need to add another to the existing ones who jump on the winning side for the sake of power.

there is no question of accepting your reported statement that "vijay has kept his distance both from bjp and congress". i am sure both have kept their distance from him as this deceptive human being can spell bigger danger to goa than the thieves who were in the government in the past decade+. This regional outfit suggested by him is another avenue planned for plundering. He projects himself as concerned goan by highlighting issues which all of us know, give him the whiff of power and this chameleon will show his colours.
