Dr Samir Kelekar achieves patent for IT invention

Dr Samir Kelekar, a Goan IT professional based in Bangalore, has achieved a patent from US for his new invention of network-based vulnerability assessment tool.

Dr Kelekar is the sole inventor on this patent.

The patent-related expertise for this patent was provided by Praveer Gupta, entrepreneur and founder of Ripple IP Services Pvt Ltd (www.rippleip.com).

Praveer is an IIT Delhi graduate with immense expertise in the area of US and India patents.

The title and number of the patent is "Systems and methods for real-time network-based vulnerability assessment” with patent number 8127359 allocated Feb 28 2012.

Dr Samir Dr Kelekar did his B. Tech. in Electrical Engineering from IIT-Bombay in 1983, MS in Computer Engineering from Clemson University, US and PhD in Electrical Engineering from Columbia University, New York.

According to Dr Kelekar, there are several places that this technology is applicable.

One important application of this technology solves a critical problem in network security.

 As he explains, several software applications downloaded nowadays have security holes and make the systems they are downloaded on prone to attacks.

Network based Vulnerability Assessment (VA) tools have been deployed in the past to detect such security holes.

These VA tools typically run periodically, at frequencies provided by company policies.

However, a security hole may be planted in the time intervening the two consecutive periodic runs of the VA tool, and such security holes may be missed completely by the existing VA tools.

For example, says Dr Kelekar, if these VA tools run every night, while a user uses a vulnerable application only during the day, vulnerabilities in the software application will never get detected.

By means of a software agent deployed on the user's machine, we enable what is called real-time detection of security holes and ensure that such security holes are never missed. We believe this is a critical advancement in network based vulnerability assessment, states Dr Kelekar.

The technology described in the US patent is applicable to several other areas of network security and similar applications.

Dr Kelekar has worked for Motorola, Alcatel, and BFL-Mphasis, apart from start-ups such as Sanware and Narus.

His essay, included in ‘Reflections by IITians,’ a book released during the recent PanIIT event in Chennai, is titled, ‘IITs – Gift of our Freedom,’ in which he argues that IITs have achieved the status that they have primarily because of the quality of students taken.

His views on security lapses after terror attack on 26/22 in Mumbai were also widely publicised in the media.

Now the US patent laws have changed. The USPTO (US patent office) recognizes patents from other countries as well something which previously they were not doing, such that inventors from around the world were filing US patents to protect their commercial interests from a global stand point. As such if you file Indian patent (which may be less expensive) you should be good, because the USPTO will also recognize your patent.

Congratulations to Dr. Samir for being granted a patent (especially when he is a single author), but important thing in the field of patents is the commercial value of invention and who is going to buy your patent and for what.. Just my 2 cents!
