Govt not for separate high court

The Goa government today said that a separate High Court is not required for the state but the idea can be discussed if the Bar Council insists on the same.
Responding to the resolution moved on the floor of the House by Independent legislator Vijay Sardesai, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar said that considering the less number of cases, it may not be feasible for the state to have a separate High Court.
The CM was of the opinion that having a separate HC for Goa will leave the judges virtually jobless.
"The number of litigations in Goa are very less. Once there is a separate High Court, the number of judges will be more and they would be left with no cases," Parrikar said.
Goa currently has a Bench of Bombay High Court, which is functional in Panaji.
Sardesai, after tabling the resolution, said that South Goa Bar Council, has been making the demand for separate High Court.
"They are also thinking to built up a movement to demand the same," he added.
Parrikar said he is ready to discuss the issue with Bar Council members and also with the retired judges to see if the concept of having a separate High Court for the state is viable.
Stating that he was also for a separate high court few years ago, the chief minister said his opinion has changed after realising impractibility of the idea.
"I am open to ideas and preapred to discuss it with retired judges and the bar associations", he said.
Sardesai accordingly withdrew his resolution.
