Mining rejects around Selaulim told to be cleared

Water supplies minister Sudin Dhawalikar has instructed mines as well as forest and environment departments to immediately clear all the mining rejects close to Selaulim water reservoir.
The issue of restricting drinking water supply of Selaulim to the people due to high content of manganese was raised in the Assembly today by Quepem MLA Babu Kavlekar and St Andre MLA Vishnu Wagh.
Dhawalikar refuted Wagh’s information that there exist 170 mines within 500 metres and 120 among them within 200 metres of the Selaulim reservoir.
“There are only 17 mines within 500 metres and they have dumped the rejects within 200 metres”, Dhawalikar informed the House.
He also agreed with the concern raised by the members about high content of manganese in the drinking water due to mines located in the close vicinity of Selaulim water reservoir.
Dhawalikar admitted that the capacity of Selaulim reservoir has also affected due to mining dumps.
“From 185 MLD, it has reduced to around 150 to 160 MLD”, he said.
He said the water is supplied to Sanguem, Quepem, Salcete and Mormugao talukas and the mining dumps would hamper all these talukas if the rejects are not shifted immediately.
Wagh earlier demanded to set up a machinery to tackle this problem and collect cess from these respective mining companies to run this machinery.

The high Manganese content in drinking water, and decreased capacity of Salaulim reservoir are clearly the fall out of the Mining.. We donot want the Tax payers' money to be spent to clear the dumps near Salaulim...All this money needs to be recovered from the Mine owners and should not be spent from the Public exchequer...
