US relents, grants visa to Lorna & Buyao group

The US Consulate finally relented and granted visa to the group of Goan artists, including Konkani nightingale Lorna and music composer Sidhanath Buyao.
Quoting flimsy excuses, the Mumbai US Consulate officials on 2 July had denied visa to the group, who is supposed to perform at Detroit and New York.
Besides Buyao requesting the Consulate to reconsider its decision and give them an opportunity of fresh interview, the media had also highlighted the unjustified denial of visa to the renowned artists on flimsy grounds.
While denying them the visa, the Consulate had stated that the group members “could not satisfy the interviewing officer that they will depart the United States at the end of their temporary stay and they could not demonstrate strong social, economic and/or familial ties outside the United States”.
In reality, the group members were neither asked any questions in this regard nor was any information sought from them to establish their status.
In a sudden development, however, the group was telephonically contacted yesterday by the Consulate officials and was invited for a fresh interview today morning.
Buyao Theatres, led by Buyao, includes Lorna Cordeiro, Prashant Naik, Norman Cardozo and Yatin Talaulikar in the group.
The Group will now fly tonight from Mumbai for US.
They will perform on 7 and 8 July at Detroit, at the North Goan American Convention.
The group will also perform at New York on 22 July and will return on 24 July.
