Majority clubs support GCA election postponement

Goa Cricket Association (GCA) has received a memorandum from 86 clubs out of 110 registered with it, promising support to the present managing committee headed by Vinod Phadke for cancellation of election on May 27.

GCA secretary Prasad Phaterpekar informed the media that the association was in receipt of the memorandum and that 86 clubs supported the decision taken to cancel the management committee election scheduled on May 27.

The 86 member clubs have also said they had not authorised any person to act on their behalf for the said elections.

The support of the 86 clubs will be crucial as it comprises two-third majority.

The numbers will also come handy as the managing committee will seek to ban former president Dayanand Narvekar for life for activities detrimental to the interest of Goa cricket.

The managing committee which met yesterday also approved the names of 110 clubs who would be eligible to vote as and when the election take place.

But the number was in sharp contrast to the one arrived at by the expelled president Narvekar-backed election committee, which has 124 clubs on its rolls.

It also approved the decision to appoint Vallab Salkar as the arbitrator of the GCA.

"I do not know how they arrived at that figure. The 14 clubs which they have added have not participated in cricket tournaments for the last three years," Phaterpekar said.

Interestingly, the GCA claimed that four of the six clubs who are reported to have knocked on the doors of justice with a petition have now backed out.

Two of the clubs said their signatures were obtained forcibly while another two clubs said they are now backing the Phadke-led managing committee.
