Chief minister Manohar Parrikar plans to change the system of granting mining leases when they expire.
Though initially he said he would auction the new leases, Parrikar later corrected himself stating he would advertise them in the media.
The old system of applying and granting the new lease without public knowledge would be changed, he told media persons at the Raj Bhvan today, after the new Governor was sworn in.
“I cannot do it with old existing leases since they come under Portuguese Decree 1905”, he pointed out.
He plans to come out with a comprehensive mining policy by 15 June.
