Samir quits international football

Team India defender Samir Naik has announced his retirement from international football.

However, he will continue to play for his local team Dempo SC at the club level for some more years.

Earlier, Mahesh Gawli and Climax Lawerence of Dempo had announced their retirement from international football.

"After representing the country for last ten years, I thought the time has come that I should give chance to youngsters to prove their mettle on the international stage.

The thought of retirement was playing in my mind for quite sometime, but I always wanted to quit on a high," 32-year-old Naik said.

"Now that my club Dempo SC has emerged champion in this edition of the I-League, I thought this is the best occasion to announce my retirement," he added.

Samir, who made 39 appearances for India, had his international debut under English coach Stephen Constantine in 2002, and since then played under many coaches including Bob Houghton, Sukhwinder Singh, Armando Colaco and Savio Medeira.
