5 independents form a 'political group'

In a politically significant move, all the five independent legislators in Goa Legislative Assembly have come together apparently to emphasise their identity.

Vijay Sardesai (Fatorda), Benjamin Silva (Velim), Rohan Khaunte (Porvorim), Avertano Furtado (Navelim) and Naresh Sawal (Bicholim) came together at a `Sanghatan' function in Fatorda last night.

Avertano Furtado is a minister in the Manohar Parrikar's cabinet.

Sardesai, the Fatorda MLA who took the initiative to bring them together, said, "No one needs to feel threatened by the closeness of independent legislators. Independents are elected by the voters who do not believe in any political party. People voted us because they felt that we are important as individuals."

Some BJP workers were mistaking the recent mandate given by people, he added.

"People voted for Manohar Parrikar and not for BJP. Some party workers were going overboard after the results".

The coming together of independents would not threaten government's stability as Parrikar has the numbers, but they are likely to act as a pressure group.

BJP has 21 members in the 40-member house.

Hi Gerson Rebelo:::I think many Goans, specially in the South view Vijay Sardesai with suspicion.Deep inside he is still a Congress-wallah.He was a Congress Party reject. They dis-owned him .

I am sure in a few years, down the line, he will re-join the Congress Party. His survival as an Independent MLA has no long term benefits. Specially financial.

I suspect just like Churchill Alemao , he too could be a weather-cock.His Political life depends on which way the political winds blow.

His overnight accquisition of wealth has been questioned and again viewed with suspicion.

He may be educated, compared to a few other Congress MLA`s, but it is his use of his Money-Power that draws & attracts people towards him.

I am sure Mr Parrikar will be monitoring him closely,as he has maverick & betrayal tendencies.

Yes rather surprising that these independents have joined this group under vijay sardessai who is a clever individual with devious potential.

The only positive is his 'dislike' for 'mr. gelatine' the ex cm and his recent fallout with the alemaos.

Parrikar cannot be rocked by these developmnets, it is unfortunate that novice politicians and gentlemen like avertano , benjamin, rohan and naresh have associated with and chosen a leader like vijay.

please be cautious, our precious goa is in your hands.

I am surprised that Avertano is party of such group. BJP has 20 MLAs in 39 member house.
