Holograms on Goa liquor to avoid adulteration

In a bid to avoid duplication and prevent adulteration, the Goa Government has decided to introduce holograms on the liquor bottles manufactured in the state.

Excise Commissioner Swapnil Naik told reporters today that the department was in the final stages of tendering the work to prepare non-tearing holograms that would be pasted on every bottle of liquor manufactured in the state.

Subsequently, Gwalior-based Montage Company has bagged the contract to provide holograms which have features that save them from duplication. The imprints would be made compulsory for each of the manufacturing unit in Goa, Naik said.

"The liquor bottle that is produced in Goa and does not have hologram means it is illegal," Naik explained.

He added that such a move will also help the department to keep a proper tab on the brew produced in the state.

The erstwhile Digambar Kamat government had initiated an inquiry into the affairs of the excise department soon after then leader of opposition Manohar Parrikar alleged of a multi-crore scam.

Installing holograms in view of avoiding duplication on bottles was one of the many recommendations made by the inquiry committee headed by finance secretary Rajiv Yaduvanshi.

Naik said that the department had already started issuing multi-coloured permits so that they are not duplicated.

"The results are showing. The department has managed to exceed the revenue target assigned to it during the last financial year," he said.

The department grossed Rs 170 crore in revenue in FY12 surpassing the target of Rs 150 crore.

This year, the department has placed the target of collecting Rs 220 crore, Naik added.
