Banning mining unacceptable: Parrikar

Goa chief minister Manohar Parrikar today ruled out the possibility of ban on the exports of iron ore from the state.

"In Goa, the exports are hallmark of mining industry. The recommendations by Shah Commission to ban the exports cannot be accepted," Parrikar told reporters last night.

The chief Minister was reacting to the reported recommendations of Justice M B Shah Commission, which has investigated into the illegal mining activity in Goa and recommended a ban on the exports.

Justice Shah Commission has submitted its interim report to the Union Mines Ministry on Thursday in Delhi.

Parrikar said, "Goa cannot survive, if exports of Iron Ore are banned from the state. The Shah Commission members have wrongly interpreted Goa's situation, probably because the members on the commission were not Goans."

"Mining is a 60-year old business in the state," the chief minister said adding that not even one kilogram of iron ore from Goa can be converted into steel, because its low grade.

"Even setting up of steel industry is not suitable in the state, due to logistic issues," he said, adding that the legal mining industry would be provided all the required protection in the state.

State's mining industry has been on tenterhooks after Shah Commission has submitted its report.

Goa Mineral Ore Exporters Association, an umbrella orgnisation of the exporters, has said that they are ready to clarify all the issues raised in the commission report.

GMOEA Secretary Glenn Kalavampara has said that the issues are mostly technical.

"Mines Ministry is in the know of the ground-level situation. But, even if, it wants clarifications, we are ready to provide, Kalavampara said.

He also informed that the association had asked for the audience with the Shah Commission, but it was not given till the end.

it cannot stop the iron ore , but can do illigal mining , Is this for the benifit of goan or for oneself .SHAH COMMISSIONER?

Govt should think this before , that illigal minning cannot benifit this to goan, shah Commission

IF the govt is changed then new govt should investigate and if they cannot investage , the case has to be hand over to CBI. so we can trust on this govt. and live happily

The mining in any State has been an avenue to exploit it's Non renewable Natural resources at throw away returns to the Sate and it's people....The mining in Goa is no exception to this....The Royalty is a pittance compared to the huge loot of the State and the nuisance it causes to the masses....If the mining has to continue---the Royalty needs to be increased by at least ten times and if necessary the export duty on ore could be reduced--as this goes to the Center for no justification....
