Matanhy joins BJP to contest from Cortalim

GOANEWS DESK, PANAJI | 13 January 2012 20:40 IST

As predicted by goanews.com, former UGDP MLA Matanhy Saldhana finally joined the Bharatiya Janata Party today morning.

He plans to contest from Cortalim on BJP ticket.

Saldhana had quit the UGDP yesterday.

Saldhana and his supporters were welcomed at the BJP office today by state president Laxmikant Parsekar, opposition leader Manohar Parrikar, Mormugao MLA Milind Naik and other functionaries.

Saldhana was the tourism minister in the erstwhile BJP-led coalition headed by Parrikar.

Parsekar said Saldhana’s entry into the BJP would serve as a boost to the party.

“Our party gives representation to all the communities”, he said.

Saldhana said he had not joined the BJP by thinking about secularism or communalism but a change.

He had quit the UGDP after his party tied up with Mickky Pacheco’s Goa Vikas Party, which intended to field Nelly Rodrigues as its Cortalim candidate.

Interestingly, Parrikar today told media persons that cancellation of Good Friday as a holiday during his tenure was a mistake.

“I will not commit such mistake again”, he said.
