Matanhy quits UGDP over Cortalim; to join BJP?
GOANEWS DESK, PANAJI | 12 January 2012 15:23 IST

Former Cortalim MLA Matanhy Saldhana today morning quit the United Goans Democratic Party.
The reason is the alliance of the UGDP with Mickky Pacheco’s Goa Vikas Party.
Mickky is planning to field ZP member Nelly Rodrigues from Cortalim.
UGDP secretary general Anacleto Viegas, while announcing the alliance, had also said that his party would contest only three seats – Navelim, Velim and Cuncolim.
Cortalim had not figured in the list. Mickky had said the GVP would contest 33 other seats.
“I am not quitting because of Cortalim seat. But these people come now and then go and join the Congress, damaging the basic cause of the party”, claims Saldhana.
Both Mickky and Babush Monseratte in the past got elected on UGDP tickets and then joined the Congress to gain ministerial berths.
UGDP vice president Radharao Gracias had tried damage control yesterday, stating that the seat sharing was decided only for Salcete and the rest of the seats are still being discussed.
But Matanhy refuses to buy these claims.
He has also made it clear that he would contest from Cortalim.
“I have however not yet decided which party to join”, he said.
Sources however claim that a staunch anti-Congress Saldhana would join the Bharatiya Janata Party to contest from Cortalim.
Cortalim MLA Mauvin Godinho has already decided to shift to newly formed Dabolim constituency while fielding his close aide as the Congress candidate in Cortalim.
Saldhana, who had lost last election to Godinho from Cortalim, was elected only once in 1999.
He was also the minister in the BJP-led coalition headed by Manohar Parrikar.
