NRIs can now vote from abroad: PM
GOANEWS DESK, PANAJI | 09 January 2012 10:06 IST

Lakhs of Goans working abroad would probably be able to vote in Goa Assembly elections this time.
An announcement in this regard was made by Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh while inaugurating tenth Pravsai Bharatiya Diwas in Jaipur yesterday, as per the press release by the Press Information Bureau.
“Pursuant to the law that was enacted to enable non-resident Indians to vote in our national elections, the Government has issued notifications for registration of overseas Indians electors under the Representation of People Act, 1950”, said Singh.
The prime minister also said: “in the last session of our Parliament we have introduced a Bill intended to merge and streamline the People of Indian Origin and Overseas Citizen of India schemes by amending the Citizenship Act”.
This would rectify some of the anomalies in the schemes and provide for an Overseas Indian Card which will be given to foreign spouses of such card holders as well, added Dr Singh.
The country is immediately going for Assembly elections in five states, including Goa, besides Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Uttarakhand and Manipur.
If the Election Commission goes ahead with the implementation of the notification the prime minister has mentioned, then the process would begin from this phase of elections.
The issue had once again come to the fore recently when hundreds of Russians participated in Russian election from Goa.
