Ore export ban unlikely, claims Mauvin

The state or the central government is unlikely to ban the exports of iron ore even if Justice M B Shah Commission recommends the same, a senior Congress functionary said here today.
His statement has come amid speculation that the Shah Commission enquiring into the irregularities in illegal mining might recommend total ban on export of iron ore.
Mauvin Godinho, the spokesman for Goa Congress said that Justice Shah Commission is only a recommending authority.
"I don't think any government, whether in state or centre, will think of banning iron ore exports," he said talking to reporters here today.
Godinho said that the state and central government will go through Shah Commission's report and adopt a practical approach.
The Commission is in its final stages of enquiry into the illegal iron ore trade in Goa.
Godinho said that the Congress party stands by its policy that legal mining should survive and illegal mining should be weeded out.
"Fly-by-night operators will fly by night but it should not affect the legal mining and people who are dependent on it should survive," he commented.
Goa is the largest exporter of iron ore in the country.
A total 54 million metric tons of ore was exported from Goa last fiscal, mostly to countries like China, Japan and Australia.
