Embarassed Cong objects to media interviews by Shah Comn

The Congress today said members of the judicial commission appointed to probe illegal mining in Goa should desist from giving media interviews before they finalise their report so as to maintain sanctity of the panel.

The Centre-appointed multi-member commission is headed by Justice M B Shah, a former Supreme Court judge.

"I have seen a couple of interviews by members of the commission, including the chairman himself. These political interviews should not be given to the media," Jagmeet Singh Brar, Congress Goa-desk in-charge, told reporters here.

He said the panel must understand that elections in Goa are nearing and in such a situation tempers can run high. "They should not comment till the final report is ready and everything comes on record as evidence."

The Congress leader was, however, quick to add that the commission has "impeccable integrity and it consists of most honest people".

Justice Shah, in an interview to a news channel, had reportedly said money gained from illegal iron ore exports was being used to bribe government officials in Goa.

Another commission member, U V Singh, had told a local newspaper that "the mining scam in Goa is on par with Karnataka with illegalities galore at every step".

The commission has legal mandate and its sanctity will suffer if its report is leaked before it is submitted to the Union Mines minister, Brar maintained.

He cautioned the Commission should not go the PAC way. The finding of report on illegal mining, prepared by Public Accounts Committee (PAC), headed by Opposition leader Manohar Parrikar, found its way in media, and the report was eventually not tabled in the Assembly.

"People had apprehensions when PAC report was leaked. The Shah Commission members should exercise restrain."

Brar, however, said the Congress is committed to take action against anyone found guilty in the report.

.If there are concerted efforts to hide the corruption and shield the corrupt criminals--the time has come when all such anti national politicians will sent home.....Good thing that the younger generation is waking to the realities....
