Ponjekar oppose Campal stadium

PTI, PANAJI | 11 June 2011 20:54 IST

The Panjim Citizens Action Committee(PCAC) has opposed building of a stadium at Campal as it would disturb the residents of Campal and Miramar.

Secretary of the PCAC, Kabir Pinto Makhija who is also the councillor of Panjim said in a press note that putting up a 5500 state-of-art stadium will greatly affect the day to day life of the people of Panaji city and Miramar.

Instead, they suggested the idea of a ground built on the lines of the one in Taleigao with a capacity of 500 spectators.

But the Sports Authority of Goa executive Director V M Prabhudesai supported the NGO, Friends of Football in Panjim, led by Dr Rufino Monteiro which has been fighting for building the stadium.

Prabhudesai said the Sports Authority of Goa has retrieved an old design of the proposed Campal stadium which was gathering dust at the Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited(GSIDC) office.

He said he has spoken to the architect of the GSIDC and is now studying the design.

It's a beautiful design with a capacity of 5500.

The car parking place has been taken care of too as the design has a provision for underground parking for 500 cars, stated Prabhudesai.

False Propaganda by the press against the proposed Stadium in Campal the place very much reserved for the Stadium and most residents came later they should have thought about it prior to acquiring residence there.

I think PCAC is right. Added to the crowd at Kala Academi and functions at Gymkhana grounds that sends the traffic along the Miramar road in total mess, a football stadium would only make life hell for travellers.

Stadia and performing art theaters should be built outside the city limits.
