BJP demands Digambar's dismissal over Balli

Goa BJP today demanded sacking of Digambar Kamat-led state government for incompetent handling of violence during the agitation by tribals last week.

A resolution to this effect was passed at a party convention here.

United Tribals Associations Alliance's agitation on May 25 at Balli village took a tragic turn when local mob burnt two tribal leaders – Manguesh Gaonkar and Dilip Velip - alive.

BJP's state president, Laxmikant Parsekar, alleged that the Congress government was insensitive and indifferent to the demands of UTAA.

"The policemen and government machinery were silent spectators when the building of Adarsh Agricultural Co-Operative Society was set ablaze and two of the agitators were brutally beaten and burnt," he alleged.

"In view of the above the Congress-led government has no moral right to continue and should be immediately dismissed," he said.

The party has also extended support to the Goa Bandh called by Bharatiya Bhasha Suraksha Manch (BBSM) on June 6, in protest against recognising English as Medium of Instruction in state's education policy.

BJP resolved that the government should reconsider and withdraw this decision.

The main opposition party has also decided to observe June 8 as a protest-day, when Kamat government would be celebrating its fourth anniversary.

It is contrasting. India chose a lathi or a danda to quell mobs and yet it can be a shoddy affair, with broken heads, stone pelting or a half blunt-sharp weapon and even tools used for foretry and agriculture, sometimes nused. Still we do not use rubber bullets and water cannons often. But if someone wants to kill, the human mind is very inventive. The 26/11 Mumbai attacks brought home the stark reality when a lathi yielding Hawaldar, took the bullets of a Kalashnikov type rifle and yet captured a terrorist. We should equip our men-in-uniform with proper modern weapons and training, including restraining their bellies from being prominent over the head.

A policeman in developed countries has good education, excellent training , is well paid, and also well equipped with revolver, car, computer and so on. He is well trained to handle the criminals and is politically insulated and not obliged to take verbal orders from the politicians---Compare this with the police in our country-....

It is obvious that there is a drastic need to revamp the whole police system in our country and not quantitatively but qualitatively----or such incidents are bound to happen as the criminals no more fear the police....
