Magistrate inquiry in Balli fire, police role suspicious

Buildings put on fire, killing two tribals

Goa government has instituted a magistrate-level inquiry into the incident of violent tribal protest at Balli on Wednesday.

Two tribal activists were charred to death by the locals, who beat up the protesters in the presence of policemen after the road blockade was cleared.

On the other hand, police has registered a murder case against ‘unknown’ persons in spite of reportedly witnessing the people who were setting the buildings on fire.

Two protesters were charred to death in a cashew factory, which is adjacent to the building of Adarsh Co-operative Credit Society at Balli.

The BJP has alleged the incident to be an organised plot by a political mastermind, while demanding judicial inquiry by a sitting or a retired high court judge.

United Tribals Association Alliance (UTTA) has refused to take possession of the dead bodies of the deceased. They have demanded immediate suspension of South Goa collector G P Naik as well as the high police officials.

The role of police has raised suspicion since they have taken custody of the four survivors from the cashew factory, after the fire brigade rescued them from the burning factory building yesterday evening.

They have been admitted to Hospicio Hospital in Margao. No person is being allowed to meet them while their mobile phones are also seized by the police.

No offence however has been registered against them.

According to information available, the protesters were beaten up by a group of locals after the tribal protesters cleared the railway track as well as the national highway in the evening.

In the presence of the police, the group of locals beat up several protesters and also set their private vehicles on fire.

Earlier, the protesters had burnt down the government vehicles while also damaging few private shops at the Balli market, following a lathicharge by the police.

The group of locals also restrained and threatened journalists, including photo journalists, from clicking any photograph of setting up the two buildings on fire.

The Goa Union of Journalists as well as South Goa Journalists Association have condemned the ‘goondagiri’ of a group of locals, who threatened them and restrained them from performing their duty.

Shame on the system which has resulted in a section of the society to fight against the other--- The reservation should have been only on the single consideration--and that is the financial status of the incumbent.....Dividing the society on different considerations --for grabbing the chairs--is a wrong step...Why are the authorities not pro-active...? Why do they wait till the people come on streets.and precious lives are lost and the valuable assets are set on fire...????

Once again Goa Police "The richest in the World", through haftas & other finiancial inducements, have dipped their dirty hands into quelling the Rights, Dignity & aspirations of Tribals.

The ex DGP Bhim Bassi, now deported from Goa to New Delhi stated the Goa Police are the best.

I guess what he really meant was they are the best for incompetency and corrupt practices.

The Goa Police is not owned by the State.Instead they are owned and controlled by the MLA`s.

The MLA`s all have a HOTLINE to the Police Stations,where they bend all rules and Laws to suit their agendas.

If a criminal wants to go scot free after breaking a Law, he just has to contact an MLA.
