Navy makes way for civilian flights due to oil spill

With the Goa airport runway temporarily shortened due to oil spill, the Indian Navy has cut down its training sorties to make more time for civilian aircrafts to operate.
Naval spokesman Commander P Mathur said an exclusive military flying time zone has been shared with the civilian flights in order to accommodate those, which are turned away due to bad weather.
According to Mathur, during the early hours today, owing to heavy fog leading to visibility issues, the pilots of Qatar Airways decided to divert the flight to Shamshabad airport in Hyderabad.
Also, an Air India Flight returned to Mumbai.But those flights arrived later between 0930 and 1030 hours, which is an exclusive military flying time, he said.
He rubbished that the flights were being diverted due to short runways.
"Visibility problems forced the pilots to divert the flights," the spokesman said.
An Indian Oil Corporation tanker had turned turtle on the runway on October 23 spilling thousands of litres of highly inflammable fuel on the runway making it unsuitable for operations and forcing its partial closure.
Mathur said the work to restore the damaged runway is on at a war pace and is expected to be complete by October 29.
