Orissa's naxalite leader nabbed in Goa

Goa Police last night arrested Shambhu Beck, Orissa’s top Naxal leader belonging to Maowadi Trishul Manch (MTM), in Goa.

He is wanted by Orissa Police in several cases of kidnapping, dacoity and armed robberies.

Along with him, 17 other Orissa-based workers working in different factories were also detained.

Goa police moved into action based on a tip off from Orissa police that Shambhu is hiding in Goa.

Police spokesman Atmaram Deshpande said 25-year old Shambhu was wanted by Orissa Police and they had sent information to their Goa counterpart a week ago informing about the possibility of him being sheltered in Goa.

In the joint operation conducted since Wednesday, teams of crime branch and anti narcotic cell raided several places in Old Goa and Bhoma villages flushing out 17 people from Orissa who had given shelter to Beck during his stay here.

Deshpande said Shambhu was found staying in a rented place at Mapusa town, 10 km away from here.

"He attempted to escape when police tried to nab him but he was arrested by the team", said SP Deshpande.

After interrogation, police have also taken two others - Rajendra and Anant - into custody. They were working in Goa.

They would be today handed over to Orissa police, belonging to Sundergarh.

According to information gathered in this regard, Shambhu and his party are working for the rights of Adivasis in Sundergarh district. They had recently taken up a campaign against increasing alcoholism among Adivasis and had killed one supplier of alcohol.

Though police have still not established the motive, it appears that Shambhu had taken shelter in Goa as he was wanted in Orissa. He was moving from one place to another, changing his hideout, among the Orissa-based workers.
