Unlike Churchill Alemao, Dr Wilfred de Souza is a decent blackmailer. But whether it is Luizinho Faleiro or Churchill, Dr Willy has been their political guru. They all have a similar modus operandi to get their work done; through blackmail. If the blackmail fails, they retaliate. And succeed most of the times.

Being a surgeon by profession, Dr Willy has always followed methods of surgery in politics. He is fully prepared with all the ammunition when he takes any drastic step. His diagnosis of a problem is always near perfect. He is prepared to face any eventuality, known as well as unknown. Thus he succeeds.

From United Goans Party to Congress (Urs) to Congress (Indira) to Goa Congress to back in Congress to Goa Rajiv Congress to the Nationalist Congress Party to his latest “offer” of Trinamool Congress. He has lost many battles, but has succeeded most of the times. If not, he has succeeded in establishing his nuisance value. Perhaps this is the reason, even chief minister Digambar Kamat preferred to make him the deputy chairman of the state planning board. कटकट नाका म्हणून.

But that does not stop Willy from being a troublemaker, if it does not serve his purpose. He always won from Saligao, a Hindu-dominated constituency, in spite of having a Christian-oriented ‘communal’ image. Split of Hindu votes is a simple game he played throughout. But did not succeed in last election and lost to BJP MLA Dilip Parulekar.

Dr Willy is now 85. Obviously, not interested in playing active politics. But he too believes in dynasty rule. Thus he has thrown a hat in the ring, not for himself, but his architect son-in-law Tulio D’Souza. Along with Jayesh Salgaoncar and Francis Colaco, Tulio’s name has also been sent to the Congress high command. But he wants to make it sure. That’s why the Trinamool.

Dr Willy otherwise is a very kind and affectionate man in his personal life. But, when it comes to politics, he has neither 'maya' nor ‘mamata’….
