Madhav Dhond… simply human

On the eve of Gudi Paddvo, Goa lost a simple wonderful human being, Mr. Madhav Dhond, to the ravages of diabetes, fought valiantly, for over a month at the GMC.

Madhavbab was one of the founding members of the BJP, way back in the ‘80s when no one gave even a sideways glance to the saffron party.

He toiled endlessly, and of course thankless, along with his best buddy – now central Ayush minister - Shripad Naik, to create the BJP template in Goa when everything looked impossible.

I still recall the never-ending patients, especially from the lower economic strata that Madhavbab used to personally ferry to multiple consultants in GMC and then foot their medicine bills as well all unsung.

With his radiant unmistakable smile he was an angel to those patients and a constant visitors/intruders in our chambers, always welcome however.

Never once did he push his way, throw a tantrum or create a dinner at GMC. Always polite, always respectful, always in service of the poor.

You'd always wonder if he really was from the BJP.

As fate challenges the best of us, he lost his only son to a fatal pneumonia and his gentle wife Madhavi to breast cancer a few years later.

A more kind and gentler soul like Madhavi I've known not.

Madhavbab belonged to the BJP and had his associations with the RSS, but that mattered little when we encountered him as a wonderful human being full of integrity, and a genuine sense of compassion.

Even when I shared a different political ideology from his, he never let it get in the way of our friendship and mutual respect.

You certainly can't say the same of the current BJP leadership bereft of any integrity, passion or a sense of moral strength.

Madhavbab belonged to a different breed and perhaps a different era...integrity above all else.

May his soul rest in peace and his family cope with the loss…
